OSCE Observers to Monitor Parliamentary Elections
The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has launched its mission to oversee Albania’s parliamentary elections, scheduled for May 11. Over 300 international observers will monitor the election process, including pre- and post-election activities. An estimated 250,000 Albanians living abroad are expected to participate, bringing the voter count to around 3.6 million. The incumbent Socialist Party, led by Prime Minister Edi Rama, seeks a fourth term amid opposition claims of corruption and manipulation. These elections are particularly significant, as Albania’s EU accession process remains in focus, with a history of electoral challenges such as vote-buying and fraud.

Joan, who was raised in a Muslim family and converted to Christianity, has been instrumental in rebuilding Albania’s Orthodox Church after the fall of communism. Albania’s Orthodox community is a minority in the predominantly Muslim country.

This move aims to curb illegal immigration, with an increasing number of Albanian migrants using new tactics to enter the UK, such as traveling by lorries rather than boats. French authorities are expected to ramp up efforts to intercept these migrants and combat the growing trend of human trafficking.
